This is a 20 Hours Introductory Course in Throwing on the Potter's Wheel . We accept a maximum of 6 students per course batch. 

<Wheel Throwing Foundations> by SOCA is a course designed with the intention of supporting any aspiring thrower to establish good foundations to grow their pottery practice holistically and effectively.

Suitable for the complete beginner or someone who has a throwing practice but wishes to explore and experience SOCA's throwing philosophy of throwing for maximum impact and always with ease.

This is a well-paced, very progressive course that allows learners to experience for themselves, how to develop a sustainable wheel throwing practice . You can expect an inclusive and supportive studio pottery environment to enjoy learning out of. 


Course Objectives:  

<Wheel Throwing Foundations> serves to clarify the essential processes behind a throwing practice. 

Students will learn to spiral wedge, cone, center and form simple vessels without aggression. This course aims to instill good habits in throwing forms with speed and ease. Students will become more aware of their finger pressure, movements and develop better spatial and self awareness. 

Students may choose to fire up to 5 pottery pieces. 

  
Course Structure:


  • Day 1 (3 Hours): Overview of a typical throwing learner's journey with clay. Introduction to the objectives of this course. Learning to Spiral Wedge. Learning to feel the clay body. Exploration of throwing with SOCA's studio clay. How to clean up. 
  • Day 2 (3.5 Hours): Forging Connections between Spiral Wedging, Centering and Coning. Understanding the tactile sensations in each process. Introduction to vessel formation on the potter's wheel. 
  • Day 3 (3.5 Hours): Introduction to Trimming. Understanding tool pressure and angles. 
  • Day 4 (4 Hours): Refining the basic concepts covered. Deep Practice and individual guidance. 
  • Day 5 (4 Hours): Individual Assessments. Q&A. Wrap up of course objectives and what to do after this course.  


As each lesson continue to build on the knowledge and techniques from the previous class, please be able to commit to all 5 lessons should you like to sign up for this course.  There is no make-up class. 

Students who have prior experience in handbuilding and/or throwing are highly encouraged to join this course to be exposed to a more sustainable and compassionate approach to a throwing practice. 


Deliverables:  
This course aims to prepare those who seek to work independently in a ceramic studio or at home. Students will learn to navigate comfortably in a studio setting or set up a home practice to work on their own ideas. Basic throwing techniques will be broken down and clarified through demonstrations. After the course, students will have a deeper appreciation of how pots are thrown, 
  
Cost:  
440 SGD per person. Course fees include unlimited use of SOCA's studio clay, provision of all tools as well as firing of up to 5 pottery pieces as part of our course. 

Students can choose to fire up additional objects. Firing is chargeable at SGD 30/per KG of  twice fired ceramics. (min SGD 3 per object)
  
Cancellation/Modification Policies:  
Fees for the course is valid for the stated dates and timings only. Participants shall be responsible for his/her attendance. Should a student miss a session, SOCA will not be able to conduct a make-up class. 


This course is non-refundable but transferable upon booking. Postponement or cancellation of the course can be reviewed on a case-by-case basis within reason.  


Addedum: 
You are highly encouraged to come with cut/short nails, comfortable loose clothing that allow for perspiration (tee-shirt and shorts) and an apron.
