Intermediate Course on The Wheel:
Balancing Form and Function
Ready to go beyond the basics? This 10-lesson intermediate course is designed for learners who have already found their grounding on the wheel—and are now seeking greater control, sensitivity, and intention in their practice. This course builds on your existing foundation, introducing a more intentional approach to form development, surface treatment, and efficiency in throwing. Through a combination of technical exercises, conceptual insights, and personalised feedback, you’ll begin to throw with clarity, rhythm, and purpose—just like a studio potter.
What You’ll Learn
By the end of this course, participants will have hands-on experience with:
- Spiral wedging & throwing multiples off the hump
- Rice bowls
- Narrow-neck vessels
- Tulips
- Chawan
- Sake sets & katakuchi (spouted bowls)
- 20cm dinner plates / pasta bowls
- Lidded jars & closed forms
- Teapots
- Effortless glazing
- Working with cobalt underglaze
What to Expect
Principles-based Teaching
Rather than just focusing on object outcomes, the course aims to instill fundamental concepts of clay and wheel throwing in students for them to build upon.
Technique-led Throwing
Go beyond the basics and learn to refine your techniques on the wheel with intentional control of moisture, pressure, movement and posture.
Personalised Throwing Guidance
Throughout the course, learners will receive individualised feedback and hands-on coaching to refine their throwing habits and strengthen body awareness on the wheel.
